Our World of Distracted Driving

Distracted Driving It’s easy to recognize it has become a world of distracted drivers and this is a more dangerous world because of it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much to join the group. Distraction can occur simply by taking a hand off the steering wheel to adjust eyeglasses, by changing radio stations or even by reaching for a cup of coffee. Even slight actions can distract drivers and cause them to put themselves and others in harm’s way. And these few examples speak only to physical distractions. Mindful distractions can occur through simple conversation with a passenger in your car. It all elevates risk.

As we strive to draw attention to National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, we want to focus specifically on texting while driving, cell phone use and vehicle infotainment systems. Indiana law prevents all drivers from text messaging while driving and even goes as far as to prohibit teen driver cell phone use of any sort. Those who continue to text while behind the wheel can be fined up to $500 for a first-time offense, and, teens who break the state’s age-based wireless phone ban can be required to pay a $145 penalty. Yet, there is much more at stake than the levy potential of a hefty fine. There are elevated odds of crashing too. AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research says that drivers who text when behind the wheel more than double their odds of being involved in an accident.

Also creating driver roadway risks are new vehicle infotainment systems such as voice-based technologies and touch-screen features. Research shows that removing one’s eyes from the road for just two seconds, no matter the reason, doubles the risk for a crash; a rather sobering thought knowing that about one in three U.S. adults now use infotainment systems while driving.

And mere seconds can matter. For instance, a driver who takes approximately 40 seconds to program a destination into an in-car navigational system while driving only 25 mph can travel the length of four football fields in that time…while both visually and cognitively distracted.

School zone and work zone safety is also a major and growing problem. National Work Zone Awareness Safety Week is Apr. 8-12 and while roadway workers face obvious risks to their own safety, nearly 85 percent of those killed in work zone crashes are drivers or their passengers. Driving is a complex task that requires full attention. We caution motorists to separate from their phones and to avoid using hands-free, handheld or in-vehicle technologies while driving.

We encourage drivers to pre-program their GPS, adjust seats, mirrors, climate controls and sound systems prior to hitting the road. Also, be sure to properly secure children, pets, loose possessions, food and beverages.

Dwelling coverage helps pay for damage to the structure of your home if it's damaged by a covered peril. So, if a pipe suddenly bursts and damages a wall, dwelling coverage may help pay for repairs.

It all matters.
